Breaking into tech at banks, fintech and trading firms

This category covers two different things that get lumped together: paid early-career engineering programs run by banks, and paid courses that teach finance skills to people who already have a job or a degree. The bank programs are jobs with training attached; the courses are self-study products. Each record is flagged as engineering or finance-skills so you do not confuse the two.

This directory takes no lead fees or placement payments from any program. Where a program runs an affiliate scheme we say so on its page and mark the link. Facts carry a badge: verified means we read it on a primary source on the date shown, reported means a third party said it, unknown means nobody we trust has published it.

Status ledger

  • paused Capital One Developer Academy (CODA): On 2026-10-08 the CODA program URLs (/coda, /coda-program, /students-and-grads/developer-academy) return 404 or redirect to the careers home page, and CODA is absent from Capital One's full-time programs list; the only CODA content is a blog post last archived on 2025-07-10. No closure notice was found.
  • closed Columbia Engineering FinTech Boot Camp (edX Boot Camps / 2U): The program URL has redirected since 2024-05-21 and returned 403 by 2024-11-22 per the Wayback Machine; on 2026-10-08 the host presented an expired certificate and a 503. Course Report lists Columbia Engineering Boot Camps as closed and no longer accepting students.
  • closed JPMorgan Tech Connect: The program page returned 404 on 2026-10-08 on both the new jpmorganchase.com path and the old careers.jpmorgan.com path; the Wayback Machine last captured it live on 2026-04-15. JPMorgan has not published a closure notice that we found.
  • paused Morgan Stanley Technology Analyst Program: On 2026-10-08 the Morgan Stanley students and graduates opportunity search filtered to Technology shows 'There are currently no opportunities open'; the old program pages under /people-opportunities/students-graduates/programs/technology/ now redirect to that search.

How to choose

Start with the flag. If you want to write code at a bank, the only entries that lead there are the employer programs: JPMorgan SEP, Capital One TDP, Bank of America, Citi, Goldman and Morgan Stanley. They pay a salary and are won through the normal campus cycle, so check the application window and degree-date eligibility, which move every year. The finance-skills entries (Wall Street Prep, CFI, Wall Street Oasis, Bloomberg, CFTE, Fintech School) teach Excel modeling or markets vocabulary; they are useful context for a markets-facing engineering role and useless as a substitute for data structures practice. The common mistake is buying a fintech certificate expecting it to open an engineering interview. It will not. Ignore any directory that lists Tech Connect, CODA or the Columbia FinTech Boot Camp as open.

claims that do not hold up

Three claims fail inspection here. Job guarantees: WSO Academy's 'top job offer guaranteed or your tuition is free' requires a $4,000 add-on and eligibility rules on the Academy page, and its 88 percent placement figure is self-reported. 'Used to train analysts at Goldman and JPMorgan': true for Wall Street Prep's corporate contracts, but that says nothing about what the $499 self-study buyer gets. And 'industry-recognised certificate' from CFI, CFTE or Fintech School: these are the sellers' own certificates, not regulator or employer credentials. For bank programs, trust only the bank's own domain; three well-known non-CS routes have disappeared since 2024.
