Engineering management programs: what is still running, what it costs, and what is just a newsletter

These are the structured options for an engineer moving into management, growing as a manager, or preparing for an engineering manager interview loop. The category mixes three different things: skills courses for people already in the job (Reforge, Maven, LeadDev), interview prep sold as a course (Interview Kickstart, Aced, Hello Interview), and brand-name certificates from business schools (HBS Online, Stanford LEAD, ExecOnline). Several well-known names in the space are free reading or communities rather than programs. James Stanier's The Engineering Manager and Gergely Orosz's Pragmatic Engineer are newsletters, not programs, and are left out of the ledger for that reason.

This directory takes no lead fees or placement payments from any program. Where a program runs an affiliate scheme we say so on its page and mark the link. Facts carry a badge: verified means we read it on a primary source on the date shown, reported means a third party said it, unknown means nobody we trust has published it.

Status ledger

  • pivoted Hello Interview: Hello Interview wound down its paid 1:1 mock interview and mentorship programs on May 31, 2026 and now sells only self-serve Premium content with AI-guided practice.
  • closed Plato (PlatoHQ engineering leadership mentorship): Plato's own page states the platform 'will be sunset on December 19, 2025' and is now deactivated; platohq.com redirects to a Substack.
  • pivoted Taro: As of 2026-10-08 Taro Premium is still sold at $79/month or $19/month billed yearly, but the company was acquired by Handshake (announcement on Handshake's news blog, undated; YC lists Taro as Acquired) and its community now feeds Handshake AI's paid 'Software Engineer Talent Network'.

How to choose

Decide first which of the three problems you have. If you were promoted and are struggling, a short live cohort with a practitioner instructor and a visible syllabus (Maven's From Dev to Leader, Reforge Engineering Leadership) gives you tools in weeks. If you are interviewing for EM roles, you need practice on behavioral and people-management scenarios plus system design, and you should count how many human mock interviews are included and who runs them. If you want a credential for a promotion packet, the business-school certificates work, but they teach general management, not engineering. Ignore salary tables on sales pages and the size of a platform's alumni count. The common mistake is paying an annual membership for a single course that may not run live in the season you need.

claims that do not hold up

'Hiring managers from Tier-1 companies' as mock interviewers is unverifiable, and the one program that promises 21 of them does not publish its tuition. Salary claims like '$587k to $940k' for Facebook EMs appear on course pages with no source. 'Join 500K+ candidates who've landed jobs' counts signups, not placements. Mentorship marketplaces can vanish: Plato was acquired twice and shut on December 19, 2025, and Hello Interview ended its mock interviews on May 31, 2026, so a program's 1:1 component can disappear after you pay.
