Formation is an open-ended, mentor-led interview prep program for experienced software engineers (1+ years required, most have 5-10+) that combines daily coding drills with on-demand mock interviews, system design coaching, and job-search support until you sign an offer. It suits engineers in the U.S. or Canada who can commit 5+ hours a week and want 1:1 coaching rather than a fixed-length class. Before paying, get the outcome-fee formula and the refund terms from the enrollment agreement itself, since the public pricing page and FAQ do not match on refunds and the outcomes data is self-reported and curated.

Modules page, FAQ and pricing page: adaptive daily coding drills, live mock interviews across 16 interview types booked on demand with senior engineers (the paid Diagnostic itself is a 60-minute system design mock), plus recruiter-screen and hiring-manager modules; session counts per Fellow are not published.

Job support: extensive. Modules page lists Coding Interview (personalized daily drills), AI-Assisted Coding Interview, Systems Design Interview, Object Oriented Design, Recruiter Screen, Hiring Manager Interview, Negotiation Coaching, and Job Hunt Support (resume prep, daily job matches, application tracking, outreach and referrals). FAQ: mock interviews cover 16 interview types including DS&A, systems design, behavioral and AI-assisted coding; homepage: "Book mock interviews and mentor sessions from day one" with "staff-level mentors and hiring managers", plus "Matched roles in your inbox daily, negotiation support, and career intel until you sign."

Whatever the program covers, the interview itself is free to prepare for here: coding patterns, system design, practice prompts, company guides.

What a careful reader should know

on the record

Legal entity per the Terms is Formation Labs Inc., a Delaware corporation in San Francisco; founding year is not stated on the site. The outcomes page says the placements shown are "a curated set of actual Fellow placements, selected to show a range of experience levels and locations. It is not every outcome, not a statistical sample" and that "some data is self-reported or otherwise unaudited"; the 2025 report covers "Fellows who submitted placement data during the 2025 calendar year" and publishes no placement rate, denominator, time-to-offer, or count of Fellows who did not land a role. Compensation figures "may include base salary, first-year signing bonus, target performance bonus, and first-year public equity value". The Fellowship's outcome-based fee is a capped $2,500-$15,000 "portion of salary gain" rather than a classic percentage-of-income ISA; the exact formula lives in the enrollment agreement, not on the public site. The pricing page and FAQ disagree on refundability of the upfront payment (7-day full refund vs non-refundable), so confirm in writing. Course Report and SwitchUp pages for Formation returned 404 on 2026-10-08.
