The tech interview that worked in 2022 is broken in 2026. The reason is simple: the engineer who shows up to work on Monday will pair with Cursor, Claude Code, or Copilot for half their day. The interview that does not let candidates use those tools — or that pretends those tools do not exist — measures a skill that is no longer the job.
Different companies have responded differently. Some openly allow AI tools in interviews, scoring the candidate on how they direct the AI rather than whether they can produce the code unaided. Some have doubled down on AI-free interviews, treating the unaided coding ability as a foundational filter. Some say one thing publicly and do another in practice. The three policy buckets
Every company’s interview policy in 2026 falls into one of three buckets:
- AI-permitted (and graded for collaboration): the candidate may use AI tools openly, and the interviewer grades not the code but the interaction with the AI — prompt clarity, output evaluation, debugging the AI’s mistakes, and integration of AI output into a clean codebase. Why AI-prohibited interviews still exist
There are real arguments for keeping AI tools out of interviews, and most of them have to do with what you are actually trying to filter for:
- Foundational skills filter. If you cannot write a binary search without an AI’s help, the AI is propping up a gap in your understanding that will hurt you in production debugging or system design later. AI-prohibited interviews preserve this filter.
- Ground-truth signal. When the AI is allowed, it becomes much harder to distinguish the candidate who genuinely understands what they are coding from the candidate who is good at appearing to. AI-prohibited interviews give a cleaner read on the candidate’s actual technical fluency.

- Practice verifying AI output specifically — read it carefully, run it, find the bugs. The verification skill is the differentiator.

- Practice talking through your reasoning as you direct the AI. The interviewer needs to hear the why, not just see the what.
